Reporters on the scene have stated that the late Wednesday deployment resulted in the death of one Iraqi security officer; however, the death has yet to be confirmed by officials. Individuals on the ground have noted that two rockets were fired, and that said rockets landed roughly 50 meters from the US Embassy's gates.
Baghdad's Green Zone, which is also known as the International Zone, is an area within the city where both government offices and foreign diplomatic missions are located. It has been the center of diplomatic missions since the US' 2003 invasion and occupation of Iraq.
Earlier this week, reports surfaced that two rockets had struck Baghdad's Taji Camp, where US military personnel are stationed.
The latest developments come as the city has been embroiled in mass anti-government protests. Local media reports have stated that more than a dozen individuals have been killed as a result of the demonstrations, while hundreds of others have been injured.
In light of the mass demonstrations, the Iraqi Counter-Terrorism Service released a statement earlier this week announcing that Iraqi Prime Minister Adel Abdul Mahdi had ordered the country's elite forces to deploy to Baghdad's districts in an effort to squash protests.
