Russian Ombudswoman Says to Ask US to Treat Yaroshenko Who Reports COVID-19 Symptoms

MOSCOW (Sputnik) - Russian ombudswoman Tatiana Moskalkova said that she would immediately ask the US prison authorities to provide medical treatment to Russian pilot Konstantin Yaroshenko, who has complained about experiencing COVID-19 symptoms in an American prison, where he is serving his 20-year sentence.

Earlier on Friday, Yaroshenko’s lawyer Alexey Tarasov said that his client was suffering from all COVID-19 symptoms and believed that the whole prison population had got infected.

"Given the information that he has symptoms of the coronavirus, I will immediately send a request to the US Bureau of Prisons, so that they report or confirm [his condition] to us. We are not talking about changing the direction of my request [to the Department of Justice] to transfer him to Russia to further serve his sentence there, we are talking about an additional request for him to get examined and diagnosed and receive necessary medical care," Moskalkova said.

The Russian Embassy in Washington has requested an additional health evaluation of Konstantin Yaroshenko imprisoned in the United States to prevent him from getting infected with the coronavirus, Ambassador Anatoly Antonov announced on Friday.

"We are closely monitoring the state of health of all Russian nationals imprisoned in the United States. Regarding Yaroshenko, he did not have any complaints during the last examination. He felt normally," Antonov said in a statement. "From our side, we requested that American authorities conduct an additional medical examination. We will demand that the concrete measures are taken to prevent him from being infected with COVID-19."

Mr Antonov also said that he has appealed to US Attorney General William Barr to return home Russian nationals imprisoned in the United States amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

"We continue to seek the release of the Russian citizens on humanitarian grounds," Antonov said. "In this regard, I personally appealed to US Attorney General William Barr and Federal Bureau of Prisons Director Michael Carvajal. I urged them to consider the possibility of returning those Russian citizens to the motherland for humanitarian reasons. Including, of course, [Konstantin] Yaroshenko."
