5.5-Magnitude Earthquake Strikes East of Tokyo - Japan Meteorological Agency

Japan is located in a seismically active zone known as the Ring of Fire and regularly suffers from powerful earthquakes and tsunami waves caused by them.

An earthquake measuring 5.5 on the Richter scale has been registered east of Tokyo, the Japan Meteorological Agency said on Monday.

​The seismic activity was registered at 22:07 JST on Monday. The tremor hit at a depth of 50 kilometres. No tsunami warning has been issued by the authorities. There are no reports of casualties or damage resulting from the quake.

A day before, a 6.0-magnitude earthquake struck near the southwest part of Kyushu Island at a depth of 10 kilometres.

​Japan is located in a seismically active zone known as the Ring of Fire and regularly suffers from powerful earthquakes. In 2011, a 9.0-magnitude earthquake and the following tsunami killed over 15,000 people and caused the Fukushima nuclear plant disaster.
