A 6.3-magnitude earthquake hit off the Amami archipelago in Japan, the country's meteorological agency said. 

The epicentre of the quake was located at a depth of 160 kilometres.

The quake was measured at 4 degrees on Japan's 7-degree seismic scale.

No injuries or damage have so far been reported and no tsunami alert has been issued.
