Several people wounded in explosions in the capital needed medical assistance and were rushed to hospitals, the broadcaster said.

Earlier in the day, a Sputnik correspondent reported that the sound of explosions were heard in Kabul's 17th and 8th districts, where the diplomatic area is located.

Reuters, in turn, reported, citing a spokesman for the Afghan Ministry of Interior, that multiple rockets had struck near the main diplomatic district in Kabul.

"Several rockets were fired from two vehicles", Ministry of Interior spokesman Tariq Arian said.

Sources told Reuters that following the attack, the area was quickly placed under lockdown as workers in embassies took cover in safe rooms.

No armed group has claimed responsibility for the explosions so far.

Last week, a member of Afghanistan's peace negotiating team was injured in an attack by armed militants in Kabul.

The same week, Afghan President Ashraf Ghani signed a decree on freeing the remaining 400 prisoners that the Taliban had sought the release of before beginning talks with the Afghan government.
