Saudi air defenses shot down a projectile launched on Thursday toward the city of Najran, which sits near the country's southern border with Yemen, the Saudi Press Agency announced.

The Saudi-led coalition in Yemen includes the United Arab Emirates as well as local allies, including forces that have remained loyal to ousted Yemeni President Abdrabbuh Mansur Hadi. It also receives support from the US and its allies.

As the five-year-long war in Yemen has progressed, the Yemeni Houthis, who overthrew the Saudi-aligned government in 2015, have become increasingly able to mount offensive attacks against Saudi Arabia to the north. Not only have they bombarded Saudi cities and air bases, but they've also staged daring attacks against the country's oil infrastructure, striking targets hundreds of miles away.

On Sunday, the Saudi-led coalition said it had intercepted an explosive-laden drone as well as a ballistic missile, both of which were fired by the Houthis toward Saudi Arabia. Another missile was shot down the previous week.
