Hotel Collapse in China Kills 17, Injures 28, Authorities Say

MOSCOW (Sputnik) - At least five people have been killed and one more was wounded, as a hotel collapsed in China's northern Shanxi province, China Central Television (CCTV) reported on Saturday, adding that over 700 people are participating in search and rescue operations.

The death toll from Saturday’s hotel collapse in the northern Chinese province of Shanxi has more than tripled, after a dozen bodies were pulled from under the rubble. The regional emergencies authorities said 17 bodies had been recovered by Saturday night. Further 28 people were rescued from under the debris. Seven were seriously injured.

The two-story building located in the province's Linfen urban district collapsed at about 9:40 a. m. local time on Saturday (01:40 GMT). Reasons behind the incident are being investigated.

There are fears that more people could be trapped. The search-and-rescue operation continues. More than 710 people are involved in the rescue effort, including police officers, firefighters, paramilitary, local residents and search dogs.
