Former Chief of India’s Top Probe Agency Allegedly Commits Suicide, Reports Say

Ashwini Kumar was an officer of the elite Indian Police Service who headed the country’s top investigative agency, the Central Bureau of Investigation, and was briefly the governor of the north-eastern state of Nagaland in 2013 after his retirement. He was also the police chief of the Himalayan state of Himachal Pradesh.

Ashwini Kumar was found hanging in his residence in Shimla, the capital of the northern Indian state of Himachal Pradesh, Shimla Superintendent of Police Mohit Chawla told the media on Wednesday evening.

​According to sources, Kumar had been suffering from depression for some time. Further details are awaited.

Besides Nagaland, Ashwini Kumar was briefly also governor of Manipur in 2013.
