Anti-Government Rally and Royalist Counter-Protest Hit Bangkok, Thailand

The authorities previously declared a state of emergency in Bangkok, banning gatherings of more than five people and granting law enforcement agencies special powers, while the opposition said the protests were peaceful and called the state of emergency illegal.

Sputnik is live from Bangkok, as anti-government protests, as well as a mass rally of royalists, hit the Thai capital.

The demonstrations erupted in the Asian country in February when the constitutional court banned the opposition party Future Forward. The protesters demanded the resignation of Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha - the ex-head of the Thai Army and called for political reformation of the Thai monarchy.
