London is Preparing for New Lockdown Amid Spiking Coronavirus Tally in UK

The British government announced a new lockdown on Monday due to a rampant new strain of coronavirus, agreeing to close schools and tightening already severe measures even in the areas of the country under Tier 4 restrictions.

Sputnik is live from London, where a new quarantine was announced by Prime Minister Boris Johnson on Monday evening in a bid to curb the spread of coronavirus.

The lockdown is expected to last until mid-February, as the UK is fighting a new coronavirus strain, while the number of infected - 2.72 million, according to Johns Hopkins University - became the fifth-highest in the world, surpassing France. At the same time, the COVID death toll of 75,547 is almost as high as the number of deceased in Italy.
