The Saudi-led coalition has destroyed an explosive-laden drone in Yemen’s skies – it was fired by the Houthis towards the kingdom, Saudi state-run TV news reported.

Last week, Al-Hadath TV reported that the Saudi-led coalition had intercepted a drone launched by the Houthi movement targeting the Saudi capital Riyadh. The attack came days after the former US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo announced that Washington would place Yemen's Houthi movement on its list of terrorist organisations.

Yemen has been living in a state of a civil war – the conflict began in 2014 and escalated the following year when Shia Houthi rebels seized control of much of the country's western territories and ousted then-President Abd Rabbuh Mansur Hadi.

Since March 2015, the Saudi-led Arab alliance – which supports Hadi's forces – has been conducting air, land, and sea operations against the rebels, who control the capital of Sanaa and large areas in northern and western Yemen. The Houthis often use explosive-laden drones to attack Saudi territory.
