A moderate 5.1-magnitude earthquake has shaken Turkey's İzmir, Turkish Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency reported on Monday.
The earthquake struck at 8:46 am local time in Karaburun region.
Later, another shock occurred in the Aegean Sea off the Karaburun district, AFAD said. The quake was recorded with the same magnitude of 5.1, striking at 11:35 am local time.
5.0 to 5.9 magnitude earthquakes are considered to be moderate per the Richter scale and can cause damage to poorly constructed buildings. They do slight damage at most to other buildings, however.
Turkey is located in a seismically active zone, where earthquakes may often bring casualties and serious damage. In November last year, Turkey's western Izmir was struck by a strong 6.6-magnitude earthquake, leaving more than a hundred people dead and over 40 buildings completely destroyed or severely damaged. In January of the same year, another quake of 6.8-magnitude hit the province of Elazig, resulting in more than 40 people dead.
