5.3-Magnitude Earthquake Reported on Peru-Ecuador Border

The region is located in a seismically active zone known as the Ring of Fire that is regularly affected by powerful earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. Movement of the South American and Nazca tectonic plates creates constant earthquakes in Peru and neighbouring countries.

A 5.3-magnitude earthquake has hit the Peru-Ecuador border region, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported. According to preliminary information, the epicentre of Saturday's quake was located at a depth of 71 kilometres. So far, there have been no reports about any damage or casualties caused by the tremor.
