Amazon To Kickstart Device Manufacturing in India, Following Apple & Tesla's Lead

In recent months, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘Make-in-India’ push has gained momentum among big tech giants, especially those based in the US. Last week, multi-billionaire Elon Musk’s Tesla officially entered India by setting up a research and development unit in Bengaluru city.

On Tuesday, US-based e-commerce giant Amazon confirmed that it's ready to begin manufacturing its FireStick devices in India.

Used by over 40 million people worldwide, the media streaming device enables users to access content on OTT platforms, install apps, and play music and games on a TV.

Amazon is working alongside contract manufacturer Cloud Network Technology, a subsidiary of Taiwanese tech player Foxconn in Chennai, and will start production later this year.

Ravi Shankar Prasad, India’s federal minister for information technology, took to Twitter’s India–made rival Koo app to confirm the development.

​Amazon started ramping up business in India last year after soon-to-retire chief Jeff Bezos visited the country and invested $1 billion in a bid to help digitise small and medium businesses there.

Along with Tesla, Amazon has followed other western big tech giants like Apple and Google by increasing investments in India.
