The terrorists planned to attack the districts of Awdheegle and Bariire in the Lower Shabelle region.

The army is said to have prevented the jihadist group from using explosives in the attack.

Prior to that, the news portal reported that local residents heard loud explosions and gunfire in the area.

The jihadist group itself claimed that they had attacked two military bases in the towns of Bariire and Awdheegle in the Lower Shabelle region.  Websites linked to the jihadists reported that the group had seized the bases.

The radical Islamist group has long been leading an insurgency against the Somali federal government, staging numerous attacks in an attempt to impose a radical version of Sharia law in the country.
