Multiple people were left suffering from gunshot wounds late Thursday after a drive-by shooting took place in a neighborhood located in the southeastern portion of Rhode Island's capital Providence.

Providence Police Chief Col. Hugh T. Clements told reporters at the scene that a total of nine people were wounded, and that three had serious injuries and were possibly considered "critical."

The shooting, which took place around 7 p.m. local time in the Washington Park section of Providence, was part of an "ongoing feud" between two groups that are known to local law enforcement, Clements revealed.

Gunfire was first shot by individuals inside a vehicle, with fire being returned from locals inside a home. Several dozen bullets rang out during the exchange, marked shell casing at the scene have noted.

The participants were described as being "young men" aged been 19 and 25. Additional details regarding their identities have not been released.

Clements remarked to reporters that the suspects and the victims "might be one and the same," and that "there'll be names you may recognize; we certainly know from police work."

No arrests have yet been made as the investigation remains ongoing.
