Earlier, the ORF broadcaster reported that the Austrian People's Party elected Interior Minister Karl Nehammer as its leader and Austrian Chancellor.
This comes after Schallenberg, who has been serving as chancellor of Austria since 11 October after Sebastian Kurz resigned following corruption allegations, announced on Thursday he would step down when his party agrees on their next leader. Earlier this week, Kurz said he was quitting politics but added that he plans to "prove in court" that charges against him are ungrounded.
