The US Senate has backed legislation that would strip Russia and Belarus of their "most favoured nation" trade status over the current situation in Ukraine.
This move would essentially allow for higher tariffs on imports from the two countries in question, according to Reuters.
The majority of the senators voted in favour of the measure removing Permanent Normal Trade Relations status.
The bill has also been approved by the House of Representatives and is now expected to be sent to the White House for President Joe Biden to sign into law.
The United States and several European countries imposed economic sanctions against Russia after Moscow launched a military operation against Ukraine in February.
