Hitler’s Loyal Fans: Mexican Couple Under Fire For Having Nazi-Style Wedding

The couple's wedding, identified by media only by their first names, took place in the Mexican city of Tlaxcala on April 29, the 77th wedding anniversary of Adolf Hitler's marriage to Eva Braun.

Fernando and Josefina stylized their wedding with images from Germany's Third Reich. They chose Sicherheitsdienst uniforms for the groom and some guests, and the bride arrived in a camouflage Volkswagen Beetle draped in a Nazi flag.
The groom, who according to Mexican media is a government official, said the couple chose the Nazi theme because they revere Hitler. He told Mexican news outlet Milenio he understands that for many people, “Hitler represents genocide, racism and violence” but claimed that “people, on the other hand, make judgments without having all of the facts.”
“Hitler was a vegetarian who rescued his country from famine and returned to his people the lands lost during World War I. His friends and family adored him. We were led to believe that Hitler was a racist, but he came to greet Jesse Owens at the 1936 Olympics,” he said.
The photos from the wedding went viral on social media and triggered an outcry from local authorities and members of the Jewish community, who demanded the government take measures against this “manifestation of intolerance and all forms of discrimination,” according to the National Council to Prevent Discrimination (CONAPRED).

Local media also reported that the couple’s son is named after Reinhard Heydrich, the founding head of the SS and the principal architect of the holocaust, and their daughter is named after Hanna Reitsch, a female pilot who was one of the last people to see Hitler alive. The couple registered their marriage on April 30, 2016, the anniversary of Hitler and Braun's death, and held a religious ceremony this year.
One Mexican lawmaker, Senator Alvarez Lima, called on the authorities of the Catholic Church to sanction the priest who officiated the mass on April 29 and who baptized the couple's children.
