"Civil Emergency alert has been issued by BC RCMP for Langley Downtown Core, BC. Please remain alert and out of the area," the entity wrote on social media.
The police later stated in a press release that they responded to reports of shots fired in several areas of the city. The law enforcement added that it had apprehended a man who they believe was responsible for the shootings that left several people injured. They added, however, that they still have not confirmed that the gunman acted alone.
"Investigators do believe the lone suspect to be in custody but more information will be released to the public in an expedited manner as soon as it is received and confirmed by investigators on scene," Langley police Sgt. Rebecca Parslow said.
Parslow further said that the shooting involved several "transient victims", who were homeless. She did not specify the exact number of what she called a targeted attack, but at least one person died of their wounds. When the law enforcement issued the shooting alerts, it identified the suspected culprit as a white man with dark hair, and said it was linked to a white car of unspecified model.
The police officers said they were investigating several areas in Langley, including Cascades Casino and the Langley bus loop, in relation to the shootings.
