The French capital played host to the Best FIFA Football Awards 2022 ceremony on Monday, where Messi beat fellow Paris Saint-Germain teammate Kylian Mbappe and Real Madrid forward Karim Benzema, who were also nominated for the top prize.
Messi led Team Argentina to World Cup victory in Qatar in December 2022 for the first time in his career and was chosen as the best player of the championship.
In the final match, Argentina triumphed over France in a series of penalties. Mbappe scored a hat trick in the game. Having successfully scored 8 times during the championship, he became the best player of the World Cup 2022.
Benzema missed the World Cup due to a leg injury and announced that he was ending his career with the national team in December. As a Real Madrid player he won the Champions League, the UEFA Super Cup and the Spanish national Championship in 2022. In October, he won the Golden Ball for the first time in his career.
Barcelona midfielder and two-time Golden Ball winner, Alexia Putellas, was recognized as the Best FIFA Women’s Player for the second year in a row.
