The suspect, identified as 24-year-old Deion Patterson, was taken into custody "without incident" in Cobb County after an hourslong manhunt that began just after 12 p.m. local time.
During a late Wednesday news conference, Georgia law enforcement officials detailed the suspect had only remained inside the Northside Hospital for two minutes after discharging his firearm. He later exited the facility on foot and commandeered a vehicle at a nearby gas station. It was by roughly 12:30 p.m. that officials determined Patterson had been in Cobb County.
Details regarding a potential motive, charges or the suspect's mental state were not provided during the conference.
The Atlanta Police Department earlier issued a release noting there were four shooting victims; however, it was later determined there was a fifth victim that had sustained non-life threatening injuries. One person was pronounced dead at the scene.
An additional statement issued by the Grady Memorial Hospital indicated three of the injured were in critical condition, two of whom underwent emergency surgery. The fourth person who was later described as having sustained injuries is in stable condition, according to hospital personnel.
All shooting victims were said to be women.
It's unclear what specifically prompted the suspect's lethal outburst, and how the firearm was allowed at the facility. Police have noted that the shooting suspect's family is cooperating with law enforcement officials.
