New York’s official emergency notification system NYCEM announced earlier that US authorities were responding to several explosions heard on Roosevelt Island, located between Manhattan and Queens in New York City.
“Con Edison has crews on the scene. We don’t have any reports of outages or equipment problems,” the company said.
Local media reported that firefighters responded to phone calls from residents about hearing explosions and feeling their buildings shaking at around 6 am EST.
Meanwhile, the city’s Fire department told Sputnik that the situation is now under control.
“Call received at 0554 hrs. Report of a building shaking and explosion. Units on scene investigating,” the Department said. “Incident under control at 0708hrs.”
The Fire Department also shared that no injuries have currently been reported.
Alarmed residents claimed to have heard small explosions coming from the area of 580 Main Street, south of the Roosevelt Island Bridge and Tram.
"Buildings shook and tremors were felt,” said eyewitnesses. Power cuts have also been reported in buildings at 2 and 4 River Road, south of the aerial tramway that connects Roosevelt Island to the Upper East Side of Manhattan.
No injuries have been reported so far.
