KRASNODAR, August 7 (RIA Novosti) - One person was killed and 30 people injured when a bus collided with a truck in southern Russia's Krasnodar Territory early Friday morning, the local emergencies ministry said.
The emergencies ministry said the road traffic accident occurred when a truck swerved into oncoming traffic and crashed into a double-decker bus, which was carrying around 66 passengers from Pyatigorsk to Anapa, a Russian resort city.
"As a result of the road accident 30 people were injured and one person - the truck driver - was killed," the press release said.
The injured have been hospitalized at local clinics.
Police investigating the accident believe the truck driver fell asleep at the wheel.
Russia has been hit by a spate of road traffic accidents over the past few weeks, including those involving buses, which have left around 100 people dead.
At least 3,000 people die in accidents on Russia's highways during the summer months alone as the roads become congested with summer vacationers on their way to Black Sea resorts and trucks transporting fruit and goods to densely populated central and northern areas.
The network of Russian highways is one of the world's longest, but only 20% of regional roads meet international safety standards.
The latest tragedy comes just hours after Russian President Dmitry Medvedev criticized traffic police, drivers and a culture of poor road discipline for a rise in accidents across the country, which has one of the highest death rates in Europe.
