ST. PETERSBURG, August 28 (RIA Novosti) - Russian drug police have seized 11 kg of heroin from a Tajik national in St. Petersburg, the federal drug control service said on Friday.
The drugs were seized overnight from a suspected dealer, who was also found to be carrying a set of scales.
A regional spokesman said it was one of the biggest heroin seizures this year.
The dealer could face a jail term of up to 10 years if found guilty.
The former Soviet Central Asian states remain major drug suppliers to Russia. An estimated 90% of heroin consumed in Russia is trafficked from Afghanistan via Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. Illegal drug production in the war-torn country has increased by more than 40 times since 2001.
