Police in St. Petersburg arrested a 46-year-old woman on Thursday suspected of plotting a jail break for her son, a member of a neo-Nazi group involved in dozens of race hatred murders.
Herman Vengerfeld, 23, is being held in a pre-trial detention center near St. Petersburg while a criminal investigation is underway into the NS/WP NEVOGRAD group, suspected of 10 counts of murder, five counts of attempted murder, terrorism and illegal possession of weapons. Two of the group's leaders, Georgy Timofeyev and Dmitry Nedugov, were sentenced to 13 and four and a half years in prison, respectively after a trial in August.
“Operatives detained the mother of the accused, a 46-year-old resident of St. Petersburg, who plotted an escape from the prison for her son, a member of neo-Nazi group NS/WP, during the investigation,” St. Petersburg police said.
Police seized incriminating evidence, including three unregistered SIM-cards and two mobile phones, during a search of her apartment in St. Petersburg.
She has already been charged with an attempt to assist in a prison breakout.
