Multiple people have been transported to hospitals with significant injuries after a mass shooting occurred in the Danforth area of Toronto, local media reported.

Three people, including the shooter, have been killed in the shooting in Canada's Toronto as a second victim had died, according to a spokesperson for the Special Investigations Unit (SIU).

"14 victims total were shot. Two of the 14 victims died as well as the suspect," the Toronto Police Service said.

Police said earlier on Twitter that a female adult had died in the shooting, and a young girl was in critical condition.

Local police said that a shooting occurred along Danforth Avenue near Logan Avenue at around 10 p.m. local time. Local paramedics said a number of victims have sustained significant injuries.

According to NBC News, one person was pronounced dead at the scene, while six others were transported to a trauma center and a seventh was taken to a pediatric trauma center. Local paramedics said that two other people were taken to hospitals and that an unknown number of people were still being treated at the scene.

Local media outlets quoted Canadian authorities as saying that the shooting was no longer active. CTVnews.com reported that the shooter was dead. Witnesses told local media that they heard nearly 25 gunshots.

At least 13 people, including a young girl, were shot on Sunday in Toronto, Canadian news agencies reported.

"At Danforth Av Logan Av Toronto Police responded to a call at 10pm Sunday [local time, 02:00 GMT on Monday] July 22/2018. 9 people shot. Shooter is dead," police said on Twitter, adding that a young girl was one of the victims.

The condition of the victims is yet unknown, police added. Global News quoted a Toronto police source as saying the suspect is believed to have opened fire at police before killing himself.

The incident comes as Canada's largest metropolis is concerned over a spate of recent shootings, more than 200 this year. About two dozen have been fatal. Canada reportedly has relatively low levels of gun violence, particularly when compared with its neighbor the United States.
