It is unknown whether the dolphins experienced some trauma in the ocean that lead them to washing ashore on Stewart Island in New Zealand. Almost 150 mammals beached themselves, unable to swim back into the water. According to local authorities, almost half of the animals died immediately, while the other half had to be put to sleep.
