Mexico, Canada See Opportunity to Negotiate End to US Metal Tariffs - Secretary
WASHINGTON (Sputnik) - Mexican and Canadian officials believe there is an opportunity to negotiate with the United States the lifting of steel and aluminium tariffs, Mexican Secretary of Economy Graciela Marquez said in an interview.
"We believe that we have a window of opportunity in negotiating the lifting of the 232 tariffs," Marquez told the Canadian Broadcasting Company on Tuesday.
In March 2018, Trump introduced 25 percent tariffs on steel imports and 10 percent tariffs on aluminium imports by invoking Section 232 of US trade law citing alleged national security concerns. Canada fell under the new duties last June and subsequently retaliated against the US move by introducing its own duties on US goods.
