The motive behind the shooting remains unclear. The airport has been evacuated, with the police urging public to avoid the area.
Australia's Canberra airport was evacuated on Sunday after a shooting incident, ACT police confirmed in an official statement after initial reports by Australian media.
The situation is now "contained" after one person was taken into custody and a firearm was recovered. No one have been injured.
"CCTV has been reviewed and at this time the person in custody is believed to be the only person responsible for this incident," the police said.
Later in the day, the airport resumed normal operations, urging travellers to check their plans "directly with the airline" as some flights have been canceled or rescheduled.
Earlier, the Sydney Morning Herald reported that the suspected assailant was detained by the police after three shots were heard. The airport was "plunged into lockdown", with more than a dozen police cars and an ambulance at the scene.
One of the pilots, cited by an ABC Canberra journalist, said that “there has been an incident right at the entrance to the security screening area …. and some shots have been fired".
Photos of what appears to be damage caused by the shooting have emerged on social media, as well as alleged footage from the scene showing the police apprehending the suspect.
