Hundreds of Bulgarians marched in the streets of the capital Sofia on Saturday demanding a ban on shale gas exploration, the Sofia News Agency reported.
Protesters were carrying posters "Don't Gas Our Water!" and "We Know More about Shale Gas than Ministers Do - So Fire Them!"
In July, the Bulgarian government clinched a deal with U.S. energy giant Chevron for the exploration for shale gas in the country's northeast.
Environmentalists have been alarmed by what they see as environmental hazards of the procedure that they say could lead to the pollution of groundwater with disastrous consequences for agriculture.
