The annual Leonid meteor shower is due to reach peak activity at about 10:40 p.m (EST) on 17 November. Leonid meteor showers take place when the Earth runs into the tail of comet Tempel-Tuttle, which sheds dust and gas particles as it goes through the Solar System once every 33 years.
