Iran Beefs Up Air Defences in Northwest Amid Karabakh Tensions - Reports

TEHRAN (Sputnik) - Iran has reinforced air defence units in the country's northwest amid the escalation of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, the Tasnim news agency reported on Tuesday, citing Army Commander Maj. Gen. Abdolrahim Mousavi.

According to Mousavi, Iran may deploy even more forces to the border region if necessary.

The move comes amid the spillover of shelling in the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict zone into Iranian territory. Tehran confirmed that several drones have crashed on its territory amid the continuous fighting and warned Armenia and Azerbaijan against stray shelling.

Iran's Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has already deployed a mechanised infantry unit in northwestern Iran. On Monday, the head of IRGC, Maj. Gen. Hossein Salami, visited the country's northern Khoda Afarin County, which borders Armenia and Azerbaijan, and called for boosting security in the region.

Tensions escalated in the region in late September. Since then, three humanitarian ceasefires have been agreed on by the parties. However, all were broken just hours after entering into force.
