Sullivan and Wang met in Malta on September 16 and 17, the White House added.
"The two sides discussed key issues in the U.S.-China bilateral relationship, global and regional security issues, Russia’s war against Ukraine, and cross-Strait issues, among other topics," the White House said in a statement.
During the meeting, the two sides also noted the importance of peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait, the statement added.
A US broadcaster reported earlier in the day that Sullivan and Wang had also discussed the possibility of a meeting between US President Joe Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping.
A US administration official said later on Sunday that the meeting between US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi was critical to efforts aimed at the stabilization of US-China relations, adding that there was little indication that Beijing was interested in reestablishing military channels with Washington.
"Our channel between the national security advisor and counterparts from Beijing is an important way to manage competition ... both sides think it was critical to efforts to stabilize the relationship," the official said.
They added that China had suspended most of military communication channels with Washington after then-US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's visited Taiwan in 2022.
"The PRC side has suspended most of those channels of communication that are military to military following the Pelosi visit to Taiwan last year. We have been working hard to try to get some of those established. There have been small or limited indications that they may be interested, but again I think this is a gradual process," the official added.
