WASHINGTON (Sputnik) - US House Republicans selected Majority Whip Tom Emmer as the party’s nominee for the vacant speakership, House Republican Conference Chair Elise Stefanik said on Tuesday.

“Congratulations Speaker-designate @GOP MajorityWhip [Emmer],” Stefanik said in a statement via social media platform X.
The House Republican speaker race started with nine candidates, narrowing down to a vote between Emmer and Congressman Mike Johnson.
Emmer must now secure a majority of votes in the full House of Representatives during a floor vote, which House Republicans hope to hold as soon as Tuesday, a congressional source told Sputnik.

However, Congressman Troy Nehls claimed that Emmer cannot secure enough support among House Republicans to win the speakership in a floor vote.

"In the end, I think there were maybe 28 or so that stated they’re going to choose someone else other than Tom Emmer," Nehls said. "I don’t see how he gets to 217 [votes]," the Representative stressed.

Nehls said that he would nominate former President Donald Trump as speaker on the floor. However, Nehls noted that he would not block Emmer’s bid if he were to secure 216 votes.
