The Neptune missile launched by Kiev at an unspecified target within Russia’s territory was detected on approach by Russia's early warning systems and promptly shot down over the Black Sea.
The Defense Ministry did not immediately specify what type of Russian air defense system intercepted the Ukrainian missile.
Kiev forces have been carrying out increasing drone and missile strikes against Russian territory, including the Crimean Peninsula and the bridge across the Kerch Strait, since the escalation of the Ukrainian conflict last year, with most of these attacks targeting civilian infrastructure.
The effectiveness of these strikes has so far been negligible as most of the missiles and drones launched by Ukrainian forces are intercepted by Russian defenses.
