"Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen was beaten on Friday evening at Kultorvet [square] in Copenhagen by a man who was subsequently arrested. The Prime Minister is shocked by the incident," Reuters reported citing the Prime Minister's office.
Head of the European Council Charles Michel condemned the attack in his post on X, calling it a "cowardly act of aggression".
A man was arrested following the attack in central Copenhagen. As of the time of this report, it remains unclear if the prime minister was injured by the attacker. According to police, the incident took place at Kultorvet, a pedestrianized square in the center of the city.
“We have made an arrest in the case, which we are now investigating. We currently have no further comments or observations on the matter,” the police said on X.
Both Danish and European leaders condemned the attack.
Pelle Dragsted, a spokesperson for the opposition Red-Green Alliance condemned the attack as "appalling and completely unacceptable". While Ursula von der Leyen, the European Commission president and lead candidate for the center-right European People's party in the EU elections, wished the prime minister "strength and courage".
“I condemn this despicable act which goes against everything we believe and fight for in Europe,” she said.
