MOSCOW (Sputnik) — In a meeting with the German ambassador, Serbian Prime Minister Aleksandar Vucic noted that the country plans to build a shelter to accommodate between 1000 and 3000 refugees, contributing to its international activities on easing the migrant issue.
"Ambassador Dittmann welcomed the positive signal sent by the Serbian government and offered Germany’s assistance in the assessment of needs for the construction of the shelter," the Serbian government said on their website.
Earlier in a day, Vucic spoke with his Macedonian counterpart Nikola Gruevski about the migrant crisis and current developments, as well as about steps that should be taken in the coming period, in coordination between the two governments.
Hungary has almost finished the construction of a fence on its southern border with Serbia to stop the inflow of undocumented migrants, while Macedonia declared a state of emergency along the country's southern border with Greece and northern border with Serbia.
Refugees arriving to the Macedonian southern border from Greece are said to be attempting to pass Serbia to reach wealthier European countries and claim asylum.
Europe is currently facing a major refugee crisis, as thousands of asylum seekers from conflict-torn countries in North Africa, the Middle East, Central and South Asia are arriving in Europe, escaping poverty and violence in their home countries.
