MOSCOW (Sputnik) — First Vice President of the European Commission Frans Timmermans announced of the review launch earlier in the day.
"The European Commission just wants to receive a little more information on what is happening in Poland. With great pleasure we will inform the President of the European Commission," Bochenek told reporters, as quoted by the Polish TVN24 news channel.
The spokesman added that European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker has accepted Polish Prime Minister Beata Szydlo's invitation to visit Warsaw.
In late December and early January, Poland adopted new laws, including a judicial reform and a legislation giving the government power to appoint the heads of public TV and radio, as well as civil service directors. The changes triggered widespread opposition from EU leaders as contravening democratic values.
