Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has stated his country expects Iran to fully admit its guilt, apologise, and punish all those responsible for Wednesday's Ukrainian Airlines plane crash as well as pay compensation to victims' relatives.
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, for his part, contended "closure and accountability" are needed after Iran admitted the Ukrainian Boeing 737-800 crash occurred due to "a human error".
"Tonight, Iran acknowledged that Ukraine International Airlines Flight 752 was shot down by its own armed forces", the prime minister's official statement reads, continuing:
"Our focus remains closure, accountability, transparency and justice for the families and loved ones of the victims. This is a national tragedy, and all Canadians are mourning together".
Trudeau's statement then outlines Canada's determination to "work with partners to ensure a complete and thorough investigation", asserting that the government expects "full cooperation from Iranian authorities".
Earlier, Iran admitted that the jet was brought down unintentionally as it flew close to a sensitive military compound. The authorities also stated that the parties responsible will appear in court.
The Ukrainian Airlines Boeing 737-800 en route from Tehran to Kiev crashed shortly after takeoff from Tehran Airport on Wednesday.
All 176 people on board the aircraft died, including citizens of Iran, Ukraine, Canada, the United Kingdom, Germany, Sweden, and Afghanistan.
