The Indian Army successfully test-fired a nuclear-capable Agni-1 ballistic missile on Friday, CNN-IBN television reported.

The weapon was fired from a mobile launcher near Wheeler Island in the Bay of Bengal.

Agni-1 is a single-stage ballistic missile with a range of around 700 kilometers (420 miles). The weapon can be armed with a variety of payloads including a nuclear warhead.

The missile is the first in a family of weapons in Indian Army service. In April this year, India tested the Agni-5 with a range of 5,000 kilometers (3,000 miles), which is expected to be operational by 2014-2015.

India is already developing a longer-range Agni-6 according to local media sources.
