The Georgian Interior Ministry and the Euro-Atlantic Disaster Response Coordination Center (EADRCC) are conducting a series of emergency response drills, the ministry press service reported.

"The Georgia-2012 drills will enable the NATO countries and their partners to rehearse actions in the aftermath of natural disasters and improve coordination between countries in emergency situations," the ministry.

The drills, which come within the framework of the Euro-Atlantic Partnership Council (EAPC), involve over 1,000 participants from 13 countries and are being monitored by 60 observers.

Under the exercise scenario, a major earthquake causes massive casualties and destruction, as well as the release of chemicals and radiation on the outskirts of the country’s capital Tbilisi.

The drills, which started on Sunday, will continue through Saturday.

This is the 14th EADRCC exercise.
