The Indian Navy has formally taken delivery of Russian-made MiG-29K (Fulcrum) fighters, which will eventually be deployed on an aircraft carrier being refitted in Russia
The MiG-29K features an improved airframe, a collapsible wing ensuring enhanced take-off/landing characteristics, low radar cross-section, advanced weaponry, and midair refueling capability
The Indian Navy has named its MiG-29K squadron the "Black Panthers." The fighters will be based at an airfield in the state of Goa on India's west coast until the Admiral Gorshkov joins the Navy under the name of INS Vikramaditya
The ceremony, held at the Hansa airbase, was attended by top Indian military officials, including Defense Minister A K Antony (center), and a Russian delegation led by Industry and Trade Minister Viktor Khristenko
A K Antony said the entry into service of the MiG-29K carrier fighters marked a "milestone" for the Indian Navy: "The induction of MiG-29K fighters into the naval inventory fulfills a long standing requirement of our Navy"
Russia and India signed a contract in 2004 for the delivery of 12 single-seat MiG-29K and four two-seat MiG-29KUB fighters to be deployed on the Admiral Gorshkov, currently being retrofitted in Russia for the Indian Navy
The MiG-29KUB has identical specifications as the MiG-29K but with tandem twin seat configuration. The first MiG-29KUB developed for the Indian Navy made its maiden flight on 22 January 2007
