MOSCOW (Sputnik) — On September 30, Russia launched precision airstrikes against terrorist targets in Syria, which borders Iraq, following a request from Syrian President Bashar Assad.
Russian Deputy Defense Minister Anatoly Antonov said in October that Baghdad had not requested similar assistance. In turn, Iraqi Prime Minister Haider Abadi said he would welcome Russian airstrikes on ISIL positions in his country if Russia’s campaign in Syria proved successful.
"I do not have any information regarding the issue so far, there has been neither official nor informal requests from [our] Iraqi colleagues. We do not have any reason [to launch airstrikes in Iraq]," Peskov told journalists.
