"I can’t sit and promise you that it’s going to result in a new approach, a new option, a new framework, a new program," Kirby stated. "I can’t tell you that we are going to be able to come out of this meeting certain that a cessation of hostilities can be had."
Leadership by the United States and Russia is critical to implementing a ceasefire agreement in Syria, John Kirby added.
"US and Russian leadership is vital here in terms of trying to move the ball forward with the cessation of hostilities," Kirby stated.
The US State Department did not rule out a possible meeting between US Secretary of State John Kerry and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on the sidelines of the multilateral Syria meeting on Saturday, Kirby said.
“Am I going to rule out the potential for two of them to have a conversation on the side of this meeting? Of course, not. Of course, that will happen. But it does not mean that US-Russia at large bilateral engagement on the cessation of hostilities in Syria, that that suspension is lifted,” Kirby said on Wednesday.
