Russian Jews will establish a youth organization based in the Volga city of Ulyanovsk that could become the largest such group in the country, a Russian Jewish Congress spokesman said on Wednesday.
Mikhail Savin said the Russian Jewish Youth Congress, which is being created with the support of the Russian Jewish Congress, would aim to increase the involvement of young people in Jewish community life.
"Ulyanovsk was not chosen randomly as the place to set up the organization. Ulyanovsk Region is one of the regions where the Jewish community operates actively, without being divided into parts. The local community includes religious and secular groups, youth and children's organizations, founded on the unity of the Jewish people," Savin told RIA Novosti.
The new organization will develop the national Jewish movement in Russia, resolve common problems faced by Jewish youth, and fight against anti-Semitism and the misrepresentation of Jewish history, Savin said.
The creation of the Russian Jewish Youth Congress will be announced on Thursday at a regional conference in Ulyanovsk on the role of youth in the development of the Jewish community.
Top Russian officials including Ulyanovsk Region Governor Sergei Morozov and State Duma deputy and singer Iosif Kobzon will participate in the conference, as well as Jewish community and business leaders and activists from Jewish youth movements in more than 50 Russian cities.
