Russian car manufacturer AvtoVaz has discontinued its series of iconic Lada Classic automobiles, according to a press release posted to the company’s website.
The Izhevsk-based company announced the last model of the famed VAZ-2104 wagon ran off the line on Monday. The 2104 joins its sedan counterpart, the 2107, whose production was ceased in July, in the dustbin of Russian automotive history.
"Today ends the era of classic, rear-wheel drive cars," said AvtoVaz general director Alexei Alexeyev in a statement.
The model was first produced in 1984 at the company’s Togliatti plant in the Samara Region, after which it quickly became an iconic car for the everyday Soviet and Russian driver.
The company announced it would concentrate on production of a new model – the Lada Granta.
