MOSCOW, May 18 (RIA Novosti) - Russia's Dinara Safina continued her recent dominance of women's tennis with victory at the Madrid Open over the weekend cementing her position atop the WTA rankings, published on Monday.
The 23-year-old, who took over the top spot on April 20, beat Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark on Sunday to take her second title of the year on the back of the previous week's win in Rome.
Safina said in April that her goal was to remain world No. 1 for longer than her older brother Marat Safin, who topped the men's ATP ranking for around nine weeks in November 2000.
