WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — President Barack Obama commanded the National Security Council (NSC) to push for a humanitarian effort in Aleppo that will safely evacuate people trapped in the besieged city, the White House said in a press release.
"He [Obama] directed his team to take all steps, in concert with allies and partners, to deescalate the violence, push for humanitarian access, and for an opportunity for those trapped in the besieged city [of Aleppo] to be allowed a safe egress, if desired," the released stated on Tuesday.
Obama was also briefed on the Iraqi-led campaign to liberate Mosul and efforts of US partners in Northern Syria to isolate Raqqa, the release added.
Obama gathered the NSC on Tuesday for an update on progress in the campaign to counter the Islamic State throughout the Middle East, the release noted.
