Ukraine says Russian WTO membership is in Kiev's interests

KIEV, May 28 (RIA Novosti) - Russia's accession to the World Trade Organization would facilitate the resolution of trade disputes with Ukraine, a senior Ukrainian presidential administration official said on Wednesday.

"Ukraine is interested in this, as Russia is our trade partner and neighbor," Andriy Honcharuk, deputy head of the president's secretariat, said.

Ukraine, which was admitted to the global trade body on May 16, 2008, has since joined the working group for Russia's accession to the WTO and has yet to conclude bilateral talks with its ex-Soviet neighbor. The date of talks has not yet been finalized.

Despite repeated pledges by Kiev to help ease Russia's path to WTO membership, analysts have said they expect Ukraine to put forward additional demands in the energy sector and trade.

Bilateral talks with Ukraine could delay Russia's accession to the WTO, so far planned for 2008. The latest round of bilateral and multilateral talks on Russia's bid to join the WTO began in Geneva last Monday.

Russia has been seeking membership of the global trade body since 1993. So far, Moscow has concluded bilateral talks with over 60 states, but still needs to complete discussions with two WTO members - Saudi Arabia and Georgia.

Georgian Reintegration Minister Temur Yakobashvili said the country would continue to block Russia's entry to the organization until it withdraws its support for the breakaway Georgian regions of Abkhazia and South Ossetia.
